2013 Upset of The Year: Jhonny Gonzalez KO's Abner Mares. On August 24th 2013, Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KOs) entered the ring against veteran Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 47KOs) at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California. At the time, Abner Mares was the undefeated 3 division champion coming off the biggest KO victory of his career over Daniel Ponce De Leon. Abner Mares seemed to be a sure lock-in to become one of boxing's future P4P stars. Jhonny Gonzalez entered the ring as an experienced journeyman in the later part of his career. Most boxing fans saw this as nothing more than a "stay busy" fight for Abner Mares. But once the bell rang, non of that mattered. Jhonny Gonzalez dropped Abner Mares twice in the first round in route to a 1st round KO victory.
